Should You Repair Your Laptop or Buy Another One?
Should You Repair Your Laptop or Buy Another One?
We see this situation quite often at Millionman Computer.
A customer brings in an old laptop with a serious fault. After diagnosis, we explain:
“This laptop is no longer worth repairing. You may be better off getting another one.”
And the response is sometimes:
“Just fix it. I’ll manage it.”
We understand. Nobody wants to spend money on a new laptop when they believe their old one can still be repaired.
But sometimes, repairing an old laptop can cost you more in the long run.
When Is Laptop Repair Worth It?
Laptop repair makes sense when the problem is minor and the laptop is still in good condition.
For example, replacing a faulty keyboard, battery, charging port, RAM, SSD, or fixing a software problem may be worth the cost.
But when an older laptop has multiple serious faults, things change.
You could repair one component today and have another major problem develop shortly after.
The Cost of Repeated Repairs
Imagine spending ₦50,000 fixing your laptop today.
A few weeks later, another fault develops.
You spend another ₦40,000.
Then another ₦60,000 goes into another repair.
At some point, you need to stop and calculate the total amount you've spent.
You may discover that you've spent more repairing the old laptop than it would have cost to get a better replacement.
That's why we sometimes turn down certain repairs.
It's not because we don't want your business. It's because we don't want to repair a laptop we know is likely to give you another major problem shortly after.
That can create frustration for you and unnecessary stress for everyone.
So, Should You Repair or Replace Your Laptop?
Ask these questions:
How old is the laptop?
What is the actual cost of the repair?
Does it already have multiple problems?
Is the laptop still powerful enough for your work?
How much have you spent repairing it recently?
Would the repair significantly extend its useful life?
If the repair cost is high and the laptop has multiple underlying problems, replacement may be the smarter financial decision.
